How to handle your money during retirement

Avoid stress about money in your retirement by consciously managing it. You’ll want to have a nice nest egg to continue enjoying life, pay for medical expenses and cover any emergencies that come up. Even if you planned carefully for your retirement years, you can't just put your personal finances on autopilot the moment you retire. You'll still need to manage your income, your investments, and your expenses.

What Are Board and Care Homes?

Board and care homes are houses in residential neighborhoods that are equipped, adapted, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually between two and 10. These homes provide comparable care to what’s offered at assisted living communities, but still usually less than what a nursing home provides. This means board and care homes can help with daily routines, but typically don’t provide 24-hour skilled nursing assistance.

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is a term that generally refers to a community where seniors (65+) are encouraged to continue living independent lives amongst friends while receiving assistance for daily activities on an as-needed basis. The best assisted living communities understand and pursue the proper balance between support and independence and are tailored to each individual’s personal needs and preferences.

What Are Nursing Homes?

Nursing homes are designed to house and assist individuals who have health conditions that require constant monitoring and round-the-clock availability of medical personnel. Nursing homes provide a wide range of health and personal care services. These services typically include nursing care, 24-hour supervision, three meals a day, and assistance with everyday activities.

Common Senior Health Issues

Thanks to medical advances, people are living longer than ever. However, longevity and a high quality of life don’t necessarily go hand in hand. The most widespread health conditions affecting those 65 and older include arthritis, heart disease, stroke, cancer, pneumonia and the flu. Accidents, especially falls that result in hip fractures, are also unfortunately common in the elderly. Many factors, including genetics, the environment and lifestyle choices, affect how we age. Making healthy lifestyle choices, like quitting smoking and losing weight, can help you avoid senior health risks.

Coming from another healthcare job?

Even if you plan to spend your entire career in nursing and never take off your scrubs, you probably won’t work for years and years in the same specialty. While it may seem daunting to change your specialty—especially if you’re early in your career and have never done it before—it’s very common and many nurses do it every single year. If you’re contemplating a specialty switch, we’re here to help you make a seamless and informative transition in your nursing care journey. Working in health care can be hugely rewarding—you’re helping people recover from diseases or live fuller lives, even if you’re not involved in direct care and so it is important to us to help you find exactly what you want to do and most importantly love what you do.

Reminisce About Fond Memories- Reminiscence therapy

Reminiscence therapy is a nonpharmacological intervention that improves self-esteem and provides older patients with a sense of fulfillment and comfort as they look back at their lives. Although reminiscing involves recalling past events, it encourages older patients to communicate and interact with a listener in the present. For people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, personal identity can seem to slip away as cognitive abilities decline. But even as individuals begin to lose touch with current events, they may hold onto cherished memories. Photographs, treasured objects and favorite songs all can help stimulate fond thoughts of the past for people with dementia. The goal of reminiscence therapy is to help seniors with dementia feel valued, contented, and peaceful by recalling happy times from their past. The positive feelings gained from sharing pleasant memories can decrease stress, boost mood, reduce agitation, and minimize challenging behaviors like wandering, anger, and more.

What do Independent Living Communities Offer?

While residents live independently, most communities offer amenities, activities, and services. Often, recreational centers or clubhouses are available on site to give you the opportunity to connect with peers and participate in community activities, such as arts and crafts, holiday gatherings, continuing education classes, or movie nights. Independent living facilities may also offer facilities such as a swimming pool, fitness center, tennis courts, even a golf course or other clubs and interest groups. Other services offered may include onsite spas, beauty and barber salons, daily meals, and basic housekeeping and laundry services.

Choose the right type of senior living

When you decide you’d rather live in a community than age in place at home, the next step is choosing the right place. The choices are many and include independent living, assisted living, memory care and a continuing care retirement community or a life plan community. Asking yourself these questions will help you make up your mind about which community is the right choice for your needs.
